Overview

Setting up a social site (MySpace.com or similar sites) to be self-promoting.

This article provides the steps required to make a MySpace.com profile, blog or group self-promoting. Social sites like MySpace.com offer a huge potential for individuals and businesses to network with interested parties and to gain friends and business contacts including customers.

The 3 sections that you can make self-promoting.

  • Your profiles
  • Your blogs
  • Your groups (called clubs on some sites)

Driving traffic to other sites.

In addition to making your social profile(s), blog(s) or group(s) self-promoting you can also drive traffic through to one or more websites or other web pages.

Standard layout

Please note that this information is based on the default MySpace layout at the time of writing.

Requirements for getting started

MySpace.com account.

If you do not have a MySpace.com account set up yet click here for information on how to set up a free account. When you have a MySpace.com account set up return to this page to make it self-promoting.

Note: Even if you have another social site we still suggest that you set up a MySpace.com account as the size of the community is huge. At the time of writing there are about 200 million people on MySpace. The diversity of the people is significant and there will almost certainly be individuals with similar interests and do not forget many will be potential customers.

EMS registration

When you have a MySpace.com account set up you need to register the websites or web pages that you would like the EMS system to direct traffic to.

The web addresses (URL's) you may like to direct traffic to include.
  • Profiles.
  • Blogs.
  • Groups (on some sites these are called clubs).
  • Forums.
  • Websites.
  • Affiliate sites.
  • Auction shops.
  • etc.
Basically you can promote any public web page (i.e. normal pages that do not require a log in) that contains ethical content using the EMS system.

When registering the sites it is only necessary to register the sites (web addresses - URLs) you want to direct traffic to. If you use your social site principally to direct traffic to your website(s), you only need to register your website(s). On the other hand if your website(s) and social site contain different information you may wish to direct traffic to both.

For example, if you have a website to promote your art, a social site profile, a social site blog and an affiliate site and eBay shop you could register:

http://www.Art-Seekers.com
http://www.Myspace.com/Art_Seekers
http://blog.MySpace.com/Art_Seekers
http://groups.MySpace.com/FreePromotion4U
http://www.mypowermall.com/mall/19511
http://www.stores.ebay.co.uk/art-seekers

Register all the sites you want to direct visitors to now.

There are two key points about promoting multiple sites

  • Send your visitors directly to what you want them to see / read / hear.
  • Register only the sites you want to direct visitors to.

Please read the notes below.

NOTE 1: You only need to register the sites you want to direct visitors to. If you are using your social site to direct visitors to a website, it is not necessary to register your social site(s), let the EMS system direct your visitors directly to any registered site by simply using the appropriate Marketing link.

NOTE 2: You can add a link on any site that promotes a different site. I.e. You can add a link on a social site (even if you have not registered the social site) that promotes a website or affiliate site etc. In this way you can direct your new visitors to the site where you want them to go.

NOTE 3: You can add additional sites at any time.

NOTE 5: You can change the registered web address (URL) for a particular registration. This allows you to change the page that visitors are directed to or even change the website (domain) from one site to another. Potentially you could even sell your EMS traffic to someone else, and they could send the new traffic to their site.

NOTE 6: Promoting multiple sites at one time. If you have multiple websites that you want to promote one way to do this is to set up a page that includes links to everything you want to promote on that page and then register that page with the EMS system. This allows you to promote an almost unlimited number of sites.

NOTE 7: For more advanced users, you can use a single registered dynamic page where the site(s) being displayed can be changed at any time. The site(s) being displayed could be changed depending in the visitors location or the time of day etc.

If you have any website addresses (URL's) that you want to drive traffic to, that you have not registered, click on the box below to register them now.

Creating content for your profile, blogs and groups.

Create your content on your PC.

We suggest that you write all your content on your PC and save it in separate files (one file for each content type "About Me", "Who I'd like to meet" etc.).

Note If you create the content directly in the field on your browser you run the risk of losing everything you have written if there is a problem during submission.

Ensure that you spell and grammar check your content and then save it on your PC.

Using a word processor.

If you do not know HTML you can use a word processor (i.e. Word), but after spell and grammar checking we suggest that you copy the text and save it into Notepad (Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Notepad).

Tip: One of the ways to copy and paste is... First select the application that contains the text you want to copy. Then press "Ctrl" + "A" (press and hold down the "Ctrl" (control) key and then press down on the "A" key, then release both keys. This will select all the text in the current document.). Next copy all the text "Ctrl" + "C". Select the destination document and press "Ctrl" + V" to paste in the text.

There are three main reasons for not copying and pasting directly from a word processor:
  • Not all browser fields can accept content pasted from a word processor.
  • Some fields have a size limit and using content pasted from a word processor may excessively reduce the amount of content you can include. The size of plain text and normal html is a lot smaller than word processor generated text.
  • Word processors may include formatting commands that are not available / supported on your social site.
Copying from Notepad will help to eliminate any problems that may be created by pasting directly from a word processor.

Writing content in HTML

If you have the skills to write your content in HTML including formatting then this is probably your best option. If you intend using HTML formatting be aware that not all HTML commands are supported on all sites, check which commands are supported if using HTML.

Add at least one of "Your Personalised Marketing Links"

It is important to add at least one of "Your Personalised Marketing Links" into your content, so that the profile, blog, or website, containing the content will become self-promoting.

Note If you add a link for a different site, the other site will effectively become promoted from the location where you add the content (the other site will effectively become promoted).

Using a link to a different site, allows sites that could not be set up directly as self-promoting (because they cannot be edited or you cannot add one of your marketing links) to have traffic directed to them.

Profiles

There are a number of profile fields where you can add content including:
  • About Me (for normal profiles).
  • Who I'd like to meet (for normal profiles).
  • Band bio (for bands and music profiles).
  • Influences (for bands and music profiles).

Blogs can be for either for personal or business use.

We strongly recommend that you set up your blog header and add one of "Your Personalised Marketing Links" into the header. This is the best way to ensure that it is prominently displayed towards the top of your blog and will help to promote your site(s).

Your blog should generally be targeted around a theme but this is not a rule, but it helps to get return visitors if they have a particular interest that you include in your blog.

Write an introduction to your blog. This should generally include what your blog is about. Include one of "Your Personal Marketing Links" in the blog header to help promote your site(s). Headers can contain HTML formatting.

Groups - Art to Zoology

If you have something interesting to share with the world consider setting up a Group (on some social sites groups are called a clubs). You can set up a group for just about anything you are interested in and would like to share with others, it could be great fishing tips, health and nutrition, great holiday locations, home working etc.

If you set up a group include one of "Your Personal Marketing Links" in the header description of your group. Adding a link in the header will allow everyone visiting your group to be able to learn how they can promote their profile, blog, website, group, etcetera for free. If your group is focused on marketing, having "Your Personal Marketing Links" very prominently displayed would be a good idea, for groups with a non marketing focus add one of "Your Personal Marketing Links" at the end like a footnote.

Overview of making sites self-promoting or effectively self-promoting

Any public site or public web page can be promoted.

Any site or web page can be either made either self-promoting or effectively self-promoting, if it is publicly available.

This allows Network marketers to be able to promote their affiliate sites, eBay shops and any other site they cannot edit.

The only basic requirements are that the site is ethical and is publicly available. A publicly available web page is any page that can be viewed by anyone inputting the web page address into their browser. If a page needs a log in to access the page then you can either promote a public page (typically the home page) or on some pages the log in information can be added to the url (if security is not an issue) or you can use a redirect to transfer to the required page.

Which sites can you make self-promoting.

You can make any site that you can edit, self-promoting providing you can add a one of Your Personalised Marketing Links, for other sites they can be made to be effectively self-promoting, see the next paragraph for details.

How to make any site effectively self-promoting, including affiliate sites.

To make a site you cannot edit (affiliate sites etc), to be effectively self-promoting simply use or create a site you can edit. This can be done for free by using a MySpace.com account or a website / blog. There are a number of places on the Internet where you can create a free website or free blog that you can use.
